Digital Grafting: A Novel Paradigm for Infrastructure Evolution Through Symbiotic Computing

Abstract — For five decades, information system evolution has followed a single paradigm: replace. Migrate. Destroy to rebuild. This paper introduces digital grafting, a fundamentally new approach inspired by biological symbiosis. Instead of replacing an existing infrastructure, we implant a digital cell — an autonomous software organism that attaches to the host system, learns its language, and coexists without disruption. We present NOVA, the first implementation of this paradigm, and demonstrate its viability across 50+ families of connectors covering 500+ services. Results show that 96% of detected services can be automatically grafted, with human assistance required in only 4% of cases. The economic model — per-act billing via prepaid credits — eliminates the entry cost barrier. We argue that digital grafting constitutes a new scientific discipline: biotech infrastructure.
